Compendium of Sport Driving Carriages (2025)

Competitive carriage driving encompasses a range of events where horse-drawn carriages compete using specialized vehicles. This guide presents the types of sport carriages used in various driving disciplines worldwide, categorized by competition type and turnout configuration.

Carriage Driving Disciplines

Modern competitive driving consists of several disciplines that test different skills of both the driver and the horses:

Dressage

Dressage

A discipline of precision where drivers demonstrate their control and harmony with the horses through a series of predetermined movements.

Carriage dressage involves performing a set program in an arena - similar to ridden dressage - including figures in trot and walk, movements along lines, halts and backing. Precision of movements, alignment of the pair or four-in-hand, and elegance of the turnout are judged.

Marathon

Marathon

An exciting cross-country phase testing speed, endurance, and agility through various obstacles and terrains.

Marathon is the most dynamic and spectacular competition. Turnouts must complete a course across terrain (approximately 15-18 km total, divided into sections) within a specified time. The key element is the hazard phase, where natural and artificial obstacles - gates between solid elements - must be navigated in a confined area.

Cones

Cones

A test of accuracy and control where drivers navigate through narrowly placed pairs of cones with precision and speed.

The cones competition (also called obstacle driving) is equivalent to show jumping - testing precision of driving and obedience of horses after the marathon effort. The turnout must complete a course set up on level ground, consisting of gates formed by pairs of cones with balls on top, within a specified time limit.

Combined Driving

Combined Driving

A comprehensive competition including all three disciplines, testing the full range of skills of both driver and horses.

Combined driving is a three-phase driving event comprising dressage, marathon, and cones in sequence. Competitions typically run over 2-3 days. Results from all phases are combined to determine the winner as the most versatile competitor.

Carriages for Specific Disciplines

Dressage Carriages

  • Vehicle type: Four-wheeled dressage carriage or light marathon carriage adapted for dressage
  • Axle width: For horses: 158 cm for four-in-hand and 148 cm for pairs; 138 cm for singles
  • Brakes: At least functional rear wheel brakes with parking lock
  • Stability: Construction with low center of gravity, elegant presentation
  • Groom position: In single-horse turnouts beside the driver or at the back, in other turnouts at the back of the vehicle

Marathon Carriages

  • Vehicle type: Specialized four-wheeled marathon carriages, solid and reinforced
  • Axle width: Minimum 125 cm for all classes
  • Vehicle weight: 600 kg for four-in-hand teams, 350 kg for pairs, 150 kg for singles
  • Brakes: Hydraulic braking system, typically disc brakes on all wheels
  • Stability: Reinforced suspension, low platform, wheels with solid tires

Cones Carriages

  • Vehicle type: Same as used in dressage or marathon, meeting required dimensions
  • Axle width: Identical to dressage (138-158 cm depending on class)
  • Maneuverability: Front axle with high wheel turning angle (up to 50-60 degrees)
  • Tires: Smooth, so-called slick tires, providing even slide in controlled turns
  • Construction: Maneuverable and stable, often with turn-assist mechanisms

Traditional Driving

Traditional driving is a competition that preserves the historical art of carriage driving. Instead of racing against time, emphasis is placed on elegance, style, and tradition.

  • Mandatory use of original antique carriages or faithful reproductions
  • Preferred vehicles manufactured before 1945
  • Technically sound and safe equipment that maintains original design features
  • Complete equipment with period-appropriate lamps, picnic baskets, and luggage trunk
  • Consistency of vehicle style, harness, horses, and attire of participants

Europe vs USA - Differences in Regulations and Equipment

European Approach

Most European countries strictly adhere to FEI standards. This means uniform technical requirements for carriages - minimum widths, weights, number of grooms. Equipment is standardized, promoting equal competition.

American Approach

In the USA, driving sport has two paths: USEF Combined Driving conforming to FEI regulations and amateur competitions under ADS auspices, which simplify certain requirements to make the sport more accessible.

Key differences:

  • In the USA, there is no mandatory width and weight in lower classes of ADS competitions
  • Cone spacing in obstacle driving is set individually for each competitor
  • Popular classes for very small equines (VSE), using small two-wheeled carts
  • In the USA, there is a strong pleasure driving scene - utility and show competitions
